Amul Plots ₹800 Crore Processing Shift in Bengal and Assam

Amul has announced a major expansion strategy for eastern and northeastern India with planned investments of approximately Rs 800 crore across West Bengal and Assam to strengthen its dairy processing and distribution network in the region.

The cooperative dairy major is in advanced discussions to invest nearly Rs 650 crore in West Bengal for the development of its first fully owned dairy processing plant in the state. Simultaneously, the company is developing a Rs 150-crore dairy facility near Guwahati in Assam, where land acquisition has already been completed.

The Assam plant is expected to process around two lakh litres of milk per day in the first phase and will manufacture products including liquid milk, paneer, and dahi. The expansion marks a strategic shift for Amul, which currently depends largely on third-party processing facilities in the eastern region while independently managing milk procurement and distribution operations.

The proposed investments are expected to provide the cooperative with greater control over production, quality standards, and supply chain management across eastern India. In West Bengal, Amul is evaluating multiple locations and exploring a combination of centralised processing units and smaller feeder plants to improve logistics efficiency and regional distribution capabilities.

Amul’s milk sales in Kolkata are estimated at nearly 11 lakh litres per day, underscoring the growing strategic importance of eastern India in the cooperative’s long-term national expansion plans.
